First edition, first printing hardcover copy of The Queen’s Gambit by Walter Tevis (Random House, 1983). Rare true first edition with what was RH’s full first printing number line technique at the time - “first edition” statement with the numbers 2-9 on the line above. For the second printing, they simply removed the first edition statement and then the number line had digits removed for subsequent printings as usual. Often mistaken for a second printing due to this unusual and short-lived printer’s key system. The basis for the beloved tv series of the same name.

Jacket now protected in new (removable) archival sleeve but with some rubbing/scuffing to faces and shelf wear around the edges - including creasing and small tears. Boards are straight and clean but with corners bumped. Slightly cocked spine and with binding faintly split at title page, though binding remains firm on the whole. All pages are clean and unmarked.
